Construction Updates

A look Inside....

12/20/2018

At our latest town hall meeting, there were many community members that expressed interest in seeing what the inside of the new building would look like in terms of layouts. We have heard those requests and wrote off to our architects and just received a nice clean copy of what the inside of the building plans represent. Please take a few minutes and take a look at the plans below for your enjoyment.

Remember if you want to take a look at more pictures during the construction of the building from the inside, please visit the EPS 73.net website and check out the construction gallery.

Foundation Work Begins 3/19

3/13/2018

Starting on Monday, March 19th, construction fencing will be placed around the East Prairie School property.  This is to keep the construction area contained and safe as we begin our construction project.

IMPORTANT:  The construction fencing will extend all the way to the edge of the street, encompassing the sidewalks. This means there will be NO sidewalk access on Crawford, part of Howard and part of Dobson, in the areas where the construction is taking place. This area is marked in Red.

If you are walking or biking to school, you will need to use sidewalks that are on the opposite side of the streets near the school building.  These are marked in Yellow.  Please be sure to follow the instructions of the crossing guards.

Please use extra caution when arriving and leaving school!

Because of the fencing and arrival of construction equipment, the lot will not be open for parking.  When attending Parent teacher conferences, please arrive a bit sooner as the only parking will be along the streets, or at Hamlin Park.

Parking Restriction

2/20/2018

As East Prairie moves forward with our construction project, we want to keep you informed about changes in the neighborhood.

During the next few weeks we will be moving equipment and supplies into our staging areas.  These areas are located where the old homes were demolished.

DO NOT PARK in these two staging areas located on the map.

Thank You.

Phase 1 of Demolition Almost Complete

1/12/2018

Over the last couple of weeks, the current landscape at EPS has been changing.  We have removed both the old learning center and small gym to make way for the new building project.

The Interior demo of the learning Center began in December. This demolition included the removal of all the interior walls, ceilings, heating systems, plumbing systems, carpet and wall coverings before the shell of the building could be torn down.

Interior demolition of the small gym began during winter break with crews quickly removing the majority of all of the inside coverings and accessories within a single day.   Over the next two weeks, in spite of the cold weather, the demolition company was able to complete the demolition of the two major portions of the building, and the two adjacent properties.

This past week work continued on the adjacent properties as they have now been leveled and prepped as construction sites staging areas.

This was a major milestone as now the district begins to concentrate its efforts on groundbreaking in March and prepping the land for the new foundations of the new school building.

December 4th Construction Work

11/30/2017

Next week, on December 4th, you will notice some fencing being erected around two sections of East Prairie School and the adjacent properties.  All areas will be well marked and isolated with construction fencing, preventing entry to the site. The fencing will follow the RED lines on the map shown.  The gates will still be accessible for the upcoming concerts later in December.

Professional contractors will begin some of the interior demolition work on one section of the building.  Students will NOT be impacted by this, as this part of the building will be closed on Monday morning.

During Dec. 6th and 7th, contractors will be working on the properties on the North Side of Dobson Street and removing bushes and debris from the site.  Please DO NOT PARK on the NORTH SIDE of Dobson as there will be construction trucks in the area.  This area is marked in ORANGE.

We know that this will be an adjustment, and, at times, an inconvenience.  Know that our first priority is the safety or our children.  For more information, please feel welcome to contact the East Prairie School office at (847) 673-1141.  We look forward to working with all of you to accomplish our goal of a wonderful new school building for the children of East Prairie School District #73.

District Prepares For Construction

11/21/2017

As East Prairie moves forward with the community construction project, we want to keep you informed about changes within the neighborhood.
During the next few weeks we will be preparing for some upcoming demolition.  Please read this letter carefully and look at the drawings to help understand some the the changes.

Safety is vital!  All areas of construction will be well marked and isolated with construction fencing, preventing entry to the site.  No one should ever enter the construction area!  We ask that you help us keep the children safe by discussing this with your child(ren).

During the week of December 18th, you will notice some equipment in the area as we begin the process of removing current sections of the school.  Demolition of the old learning center and small gym, is scheduled for winter break and will not occur while school is in session.  This phase is represented in RED in the drawing.

After the winter break, construction will move across Dobson Street and begin prepping the district properties, represented in ORANGE. These locations will become staging areas for the next major phase of construction.  This phase will happen in January and will be well marked and blocked off with fencing, to prevent entry.

We are working very closely with our construction company to keep a schedule, but there might be times where special equipment has to come into the area, or times that Dobson Street could be closed.  Our intention is to keep this to a minimum.  Should Dobson Street need to be temporarily closed, there will be signs posted at the West side of Dobson St.

If Dobson is closed we will be asking parents to use East Prairie Road to drop off students.  Buses will all  be moved to East Prairie Road as well to alleviate congestion.  This is represented in GREEN.

We know that this will be an adjustment, and at times an inconvenience.  Know that our first priority is the safety of our children.  For more information, please feel welcome to contact East Prairie School office (847) 673-1141.  We look forward to working with all of you to accomplish our goal of a wonderful new school building for the children of East Prairie School District.

Students View New Designs

11/7/2017

Picture

Today was a special treat for the students at East Prairie School. This afternoon a number of staff members from East Prairie School, took some time and reconfigured our main trophy case in front of the gymnasium, into a "coming soon" gallery of the new school designs.
To see the faces and reactions of the children was absolutely priceless. Students cannot wait for the new building to open, and the excitement in the air was electrifying. Though some students were saddened by the fact that they would graduate before the project reaches completion, we always want to welcome any former student and community member into the new school.

Some of the comments that were overheard this afternoon were:

"Wow, I just can wait!"

"OMG, This looks like the place from High School Musical!"

and...

"I can't wait until my kids can go to this school."

Please be sure to stop by the school and take a look at the renderings if you're in the school building.

Interior Planing Work Continues

11/7/2017

Work has been continuing at a rapid pace, involving professionals from all industries. East Prairie School district officials have spent countless number of hours working on the look and feel of the classrooms, as well as the safety and security of students and staff within this new building.

Even details about carpet and tile designs have taken place.  All of this has been to ensure that the students feel like this is a place in which 21st Century Learning can take place.

East Prairie School Plans Pass Skokie Review Boards

10/17/2017

Picture

Last night, by a unanimous vote, the architectural and engineering plans that have been compiled by the Architects and District #73 officials and recommended by the Planning Commission, were approved by the Village of Skokie's Board of Trustees.

District #73 officials along with STR Partners architectural firm and CS2 Engineering, presented the history of the project, the community engagement process that took place and reviewed the design process and reviewed plans to the Board of Trustees.

Up To Date Site Plans and building details will be discussed with the community and school parents and a number of meetings during the next few weeks.  A couple of these times will include Parent Teacher Conferences on November 21st as well as the Celebrate EPS event to be held December 2nd.

Again, East Prairie School thanks all of those that have been involved in this project.  This has been a long and exciting journey and we are all so excited about creating this structure for the future generations.
